Janet Cherry, MSW, LCSW (Director, System of Care Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools)

What’s in your school mental health toolkit?  A School Social Worker’s job can be quite daunting and demanding due to the increased expectations to improve student outcomes.  School social workers are often the first line of defense in providing support to students with unmet mental health needs resulting in poor school attendance, suspension or dropping out of school.  This presentation will discuss how integrating a ‘system of care’ approach within a school setting can create pathways to removing barriers to student success.

Felicia Gibson, PhD (Center for Child and Family Health)

Have you ever wondered why children struggle to attend or react in ways that seem out of proportion to the situation? It is likely that some of the behaviors you see in children are the result of trauma.  Dr. Gibson will be presenting on what trauma is, how trauma impacts students, and how staff are impacted by students with trauma.
